Mira Kapoor On Weird Obsessions, Bathroom Singing, and Skincare for Lazy Girls

The co-founder of Akind has an intimate conversation with The Word. about life, skincare routines, and more.

The Word.: What’s your nighttime regime…including but not limited to skincare?
Mira Kapoor: “I’m a big believer in nighttime routines because your skin repairs and rejuvenates itself when you sleep. After using the Akind Clean Slate Hydrating cleanser, I apply the Sleep Tight Firming Serum, which is great for when my skin needs some extra help. I also enjoy using the Get Even Everyday Multi-Active Serum, which is very easy to layer with.

I have been incorporating face massages into my nighttime routine because it helps all the skincare products absorb better while working out the muscles of my face. Your face holds stress—under the eyes or in the jaw. So a face massage lifts and relaxes your muscles, while getting the blood circulation going. It takes just a few minutes at night, but can make a big difference.”

TW.: Do you use face tools as well?
MK: “I love using face tools, and I’m always on the hunt for new ones. For instance, I just picked up a Reflexology pen—it’s like a pen with two globes of different sizes. They activate the meridians and marma points on your face. I’m loving how it gets into the eye socket…it’s so relaxing, and you end up getting a great night’s sleep.

That said, my fingers are my favourite ‘face tool’ because I can do exactly what I want with the right kind of pressure and different strokes.”

TW.: And do you read before bed or watch a show?
MK: “Before sleeping, my guilty pleasure is listening to podcasts. Though if I’m really tired, I just crash. The world could be coming to an end, and I’ll sleep through it. I’m also obsessed with the OTT series, ‘Schitt’s Creek’. I love each character, their lines, their style, and just how bizarre the plot is. Even if I have other options, I’d still watch ‘Schitt’s Creek’.”

TW.: Tell us about Drop a Hint Hydrating Skin Tint… What makes it special?
MK: “I’m excited to launch the Drop A Hint Hydrating Skin Tint SPF 30 PA+++. This new product is everything in a bottle…and I don’t say that lightly. It has SPF; skincare benefits of Vitamin B, C, and E; hyaluronic acid for hydration; licorice root extracts; squalene; plus the coverage you’d want in make-up. It’s perfect for a lazy girl and for a skin enthusiast, for a woman, a man, day, or night. I just love that we’ve created a product that does everything for everyone!”

TW. And are you someone who drops hints to communicate or are you more of a straight shooter?
MK: “I’m a straight shooter when it comes to communicating. I like to be straight up, but not in a way that would offend anybody.”

Instagram will load in the frontend.

TW.: What’s a weird obsession that you have?
MK: “My weird obsession is the colour yellow. Everything I own is in yellow, and it has been this way for nearly 15 years. If I ever find anything in yellow, I’ll buy it—a pen, a pouch, a bag, a wallet…”

TW.: Would you also say you’re more confident in dealing with situations?
MK: “I love the fact that I’ve just turned 30. I love that I’m not considered a kid anymore. And I love that turning 30 comes with its own stability. Now, I am more confident in who I am and what I stand for, I understand the non-negotiables and the things I’m open to changing. That confidence is an inner confidence of knowing who I am, what I’m good at, and what I’m not good at. I feel a lot calmer and in control.”

TW.: Is there a haircut you’ve been eyeing but are nervous to actually get done?
MK: “If I had the courage to do it, I’d chop my hair super-short, into a lob. I just don’t have the guts to do it because I’m scared it’ll never grow back! Also, I worry about what will happen to it in the humidity…I’ll end up having hair like Monica [from F.R.I.E.N.D.S] did!” [laughs]

TW.: How have you evolved as a woman, over the years?
MK: “I evolved as a person without my even realising it. I only fathomed it all much later…how I handled reacting to situations well, or was at ease in certain environments or with groups of people, or managed things thrown my way. It was about responding at that moment in the best way possible.

Sometimes, you realise that certain traits are your strengths. For instance, if I can make someone feel special when I’m talking to them, it comes naturally to me because I want to know more about them.

Or, you could have a weakness, like crumbling under pressure. What’s the best way to deal with it? For instance, there could be days when your child has a football match and your sister flies in at the same time and you have a shoot and an event in the evening. I’m so much better at dealing with things now. Time has its own ways of changing you.”

TW.: Random question: Are you a shower singer?
MK: “I’m a bathroom singer… It’s the only place I sing. I’m not a shower performer, though. That’s not happening!”

TW.: Finally, what is a beauty trend you’ll never try?
MK: “One make-up trend I’ll never try is that heavily-baked contouring one, where you use layers and layers of make-up….and then you add foundation and powder! You’ll never see me in those many layers of heavy make-up.”
